Chloroquine phosphate for prevention:

Adults should take one dose (typically a 250mg tablet) per week, on the same day of the week. Start taking chloroquine phosphate two weeks before traveling to a malaria-affected area. Continue while you are in the affected area and for 8 weeks after you have left. If you are unable to start taking chloroquine phosphate two weeks before travel, your doctor may have you take a larger dose.

For children, the dosing will be different. Your doctor will calculate how much the child needs based on his or her weight.

Chloroquine phosphate for malaria infection:

For adults infected by malaria, one dose of chloroquine phosphate should be taken right away. 6 to 8 hours later, another half dose. Half a dose is taken once a day for the next two days.

Tell your doctor about all other prescriptions, vitamins, supplements and other medications you are taking. Be sure to mention: acetaminophen, cimetidine, iron, isoniazid, kaolin, magnesium trisilicate, methotrexate, niacin, and rifampin.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease, hearing problems, porphyria or any other blood disorders, psoriasis, weakness in your joints, or if you have an alcohol problem.

Tell your physician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you become pregnant while taking chloroquine phosphate.

Side effects of chloroquine phosphate may include a headache, loss of appetite, mood changes, upset stomach, itching or rash, or hair loss.

Call your physician straight away if you experience: blurred vision, seeing bright streaks of light, difficulty reading or seeing objects, ringing in ears, muscle weakness, vomiting, convulsions, or irregular heartbeat.

This may not be a complete list of side effects. Talk to your doctor for more information.
