The diazepam drug has several uses. It may be prescribed to treat seizures or muscle spasms, or it may be prescribed for acute alcohol withdrawal. It can also be used to treat anxiety or to provide sedation before surgery. It works by producing a calming effect on the brain.

The dosage strength for diazepam pills is in 2, 5, and 10mg increments, and the liquid concentration is 5mg/5ml. The condition being treated and the medical history of the patient are the determining factors in both the strength and form prescribed. While the circumstances of each patient vary, the diazepam medicine is usually taken one to four times a day, with or without food. With a doctor’s approval and supervision, it may be possible to split larger dosages of this medication into smaller ones. 

Pregnancy: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing a child prior to taking the diazepam drug. If you become pregnant while you are taking diazepam, contact your physician.

Interactions: Tell your doctor if you are allergic to the diazepam drug or any of the ingredients in the medication. Tell your doctor if you are taking Zantac, medications to treat Parkinson’s disease, oral contraceptives, probenecid, asthma medications, metoprolol, other muscle relaxants, propoxyphene, sedatives, seizure medications, tranquilizers, ketoconazole, isoniazid, digoxin, fluoxetine, Depakene, cimetidine, or antihistamines. Do not smoke or drink alcohol while taking this medication. Provide a complete list of all prescription and non-prescription medications you are taking, as well as any vitamins or supplements that you use.

Medical Conditions: Provide your doctor with a complete medical history. Tell your doctor if you have, or have had, seizures, heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, liver disease, glaucoma, or you are being treated for Parkinson’s disease.
