Imitrex is prescribed to treat the symptoms of migraine headaches, with or without aura. It does not help prevent migraines from occurring.
The Imitrex drug is available in several forms and dosage strengths including a nasal spray (5 and 20mg), tablets (25, 50, or 100mg strengths), and vials for injection. The nasal spray and tablets come in specific dosing quantities. All formulations are taken at the first sign of a migraine headache. If the condition improves, but returns within two hours, your doctor may recommend another dose. If your condition does not improve after taking Imitrex, or the frequency of migraines increases, contact your doctor.
Imitrex may cause drowsiness or dizziness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until its effects are known. Imitrex does not prevent migraines. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant. Do not take Imitrex more frequently or for a longer time than the prescription instructs. If your migraines do not improve after taking this medication, contact your healthcare provider.
