Janumet is used, along with diet and exercise, to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar is too high because the body does not produce insulin normally.

Janumet is a combination drug that contains, Sitagliptin, which is in a class of medications called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, and Metformin Hydrochloride, which is in a class of medications called biguanides.

Janumet is not used to treat type 1 diabetes.

The average recommended maintenance dose of Janumet tablets is 500 mg/50 mg two times per day. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 2000 mg of Metformin Hydrochloride and 100 mg of Sitagliptin. Consult with your doctor for specific dosage and use information for this drug for the treatment of your condition.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms and they persist or become severe: stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, upper respiratory infection, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, gas, upset stomach, indigestion, weakness, headache, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when used in combination with certain medications, such as a sulfonylurea or insulin.

Janumet can cause serious side effects, including Lactic Acidosis, a condition in which lactic acid builds up in the blood and can cause death. Lactic Acidosis is a medical emergency and it must be treated immediately.

Stop taking Janumet and call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: weakness or tiredness, unusual muscle pain, difficulty breathing, unusual sleepiness or sleep longer than usual, sudden stomach or intestinal problems with nausea and vomiting or diarrhea, feel cold, especially in your arms and legs, dizziness or lightheadedness, and slow or irregular heartbeat.
