Patients take Lamictal to help control epileptic seizures, which cause dangerous and sometimes violent convulsions. Children as young as two years old can use immediate-release formulations in combination with other seizure medications. Alone, the medication should not be used to treat children under the age of 16. The extended release formulation should only treat adults and children 13 years of age and older. This medication can also delay mood episodes in adults who suffer from bipolar disorder (manic depression).
Lamictal comes in immediate-release and extended-release tablets. There are orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) and chewable dispersible tablets available. Extended-release tablets are for swallowing whole. Allow ODTs to dissolve in the mouth without chewing and take with a liquid to help push the medication down. Take chewable tablets with a glass of water. Chew completely then swallow. Follow all instructions provided to you by your doctor.
Take this medication only as directed by a doctor. Make sure you carry an alert tag or medical ID card that identifies you as a patient with epilepsy. Do not stop using this medication suddenly, as it may increase the frequency of your seizures if you do so. You may have thoughts of suicide while taking this medication. Report any unusual thoughts or behaviors to your doctor.
