Methyldopa is used to treat high blood pressure in combination with changes to diet and lifestyle. As an antihypertensive, Methyldopa works by relaxing rigid blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily through the circulatory system. High blood pressure is a common condition, but if left untreated it can do serious damage to many parts of the body. High blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, blindness and other related problems. Methyldopa is taken as a liquid or oral tablet several times per day. The cost of this medication is about $382 for 50mL. Methyldopa is an expensive drug, but you can save each time you refill your prescription by using a SearchRx discount card. Alternatively, use the SearchRx site to browse through prices at your local pharmacies. Download and print your methyldopa coupon, then present it to the pharmacist for savings. Make saving on your prescription even easier by having a Methyldopa discount sent directly to your cell phone by email or text message.

Methyldopa is an antihypertensive which works by relaxing blood vessels to allow the blood to flow more easily.

Methyldopa is available as both a liquid and as a tablet. Both are taken orally two to four times per day. It is best practice to take your medication at the same time each day to ensure that you do not forget a dose.

If using the liquid version of the drug, be sure to shake the bottle well before each use. Use the measuring spoon provided, never a household spoon. This will allow you to be sure you are always taking the correct amount.

Methyldopa is used to treat high blood pressure, but it will not cure your condition. Continue to take methyldopa as long as instructed to do so by your doctor.

If you are allergic to methyldopa or any ingredients in the tablets or liquid, do not use this medication. Before beginning methyldopa, inform your doctor about all medications, vitamins, and supplements that you are taking so that he or she may check for negative interactions. Be sure to mention if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor; your doctor will probably tell you not to take methyldopa.

Do not take any dietary supplements containing iron while using methyldopa.

If you are over 65 years old, talk to your doctor about safer alternatives to methyldopa.

Talk to your doctor about the risks of taking methyldopa while pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you plan to become pregnant.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking methyldopa.

This medication may make you drowsy. Be aware of this and do not drive before understanding how methyldopa affects you.

Side effects of methyldopa may include swelling of the feet or ankles, headache, vomiting or diarrhea, stomach ache, rash, dry mouth, or muscle weakness.

If you experience the following side effects, call your doctor immediately: extreme tiredness, unexplained fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

This may not be a complete list of side effects and warnings.
