Forms of metronidazole

The exact formulation and dosage prescribed will depend on the condition being treated. If you have been prescribed metronidazole pills or tablets, follow the dosing directions provided by your doctor; take all of the prescribed medication.

If you have been prescribed the extended release tablets to treat bacterial vaginitis, it must be taken whole, without food. Take all of the prescribed medication.

If the topical gel has been prescribed, apply it twice daily for five days using the special applicator that is provided.

If you are using the cream to treat acne rosacea, use it once or twice a day; it does not cure this condition so continue using it even though the symptoms subside. Apply the cream by hand to the face 15 to 20 minutes after cleansing the area.

Wash hands thoroughly after applying either the metronidazole cream or gel to prevent the spread of infection. Do not use tampons when being treated with metronidazole gel, as they will absorb the medication.
