Repatha is used along with a low-fat diet and other cholesterol-lowering medications to lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, in patients with inherited types of high cholesterol (homozygous or heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia). This drug is also used to treat patients with arteriosclerosis, a condition in which plaque buildup or hardening of the arteries cause heart or blood vessel problems.

Repatha is classified as a proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitor monoclonal antibody. It works by blocking the production of LDL cholesterol in the body to decrease levels of cholesterol buildup in the arteries that may block blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.

The average recommended subcutaneous dosage of Repatha for patients with hyperlipidemia (high lipids in the blood, or high cholesterol) is 140 mg every 2 weeks, or 420 mg once per month.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms and they are persistent or severe:  redness, itching, swelling, pain, or tenderness at the injection site, flu-like symptoms, runny nose, sore throat, fever, or chills, pain or burning during urination, muscle pain or back pain, dizziness, and stomach pain.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious symptoms: itching, rash, or hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, and eyes.
