Simvastatin is prescribed in dosage strengths of 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80mg. It is in tablet form to be taken orally, usually once a day in the evening. It may be taken with or without food. However, do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking the simvastatin drug. Take only the amount prescribed and do not stop taking it without your doctor’s approval.

Pregnancy: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child. If you become pregnant while taking simvastatin, contact your physician.

Interactions: Provide your doctor with a complete list of all medications you are taking, including both prescription and non-prescription drugs, as well as any vitamins and supplements you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to simvastatin or any ingredients in the tablet. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking simvastatin. Tell your doctor if you are taking antifungal medications, antibiotics (especially clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin), or hepatitis C medications; medications to treat HIV/AIDS; nefazodone, danazol, cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, lomitapide, or heart medications, including verapamil, diltiazem, ranolazine, amiodarone, and dronedarone.

Medical Conditions: Provide your doctor with a complete medical history. Tell your doctor if you have, or have had, kidney, liver, or heart disease; diabetes; a thyroid disorder such as hypothyroidism; if you consume more than two alcoholic beverages per day; of if you are sixty-five or older.
