Truvada may be prescribed along with other medications to reduce the risk of complications from HIV. It is also sometimes prescribed as a preventive measure for people who don’t have HIV but have a high risk of infection (e.g. people who have a partner with HIV). It will not cure HIV, but it can reduce the risk of new infections related to this virus.
Truvada comes in a tablet that contains 200mg of emtricitabine and 300mg of tenofovir. It is usually prescribed to be taken once daily with or without food. However, your doctor may adjust the dose based on your condition, kidney function, and response to treatment.
In rare cases, Truvada can cause a potentially fatal condition called lactic acidosis. Call your doctor immediately if you experience any signs of lactic acidosis or liver problems, including clay-colored stools, dark urine, persistent nausea, abdominal or stomach pain, jaundice, an irregular heart rate, weakness, fast breathing, unusual drowsiness, or unusual coldness in your arms or legs. Truvada will not stop the transmission of HIV, so do not have unprotected sex or share razors, toothbrushes, or needles if you are HIV-positive. If you are taking this medicine to reduce your risk of HIV infection, you will need to have a negative HIV test before you begin taking doses and should get tested every three months during treatment.
