Valproic acid is available in several different forms: capsules, extended-release tablets, delayed-release tablets, a syrup, and as sprinkle beads. The extended release tablets are usually taken once per day, the other forms are taken twice per day. All doses should be taken at the same time each day. Take your prescription exactly as directed, do not take more or less than you are prescribed. Your doctor will most likely start you on a low dose and gradually increase it.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had episodes of confusion, been in a coma, had difficulty coordinating your movements if you have HIV or CMV.

Valproic acid may cause drowsiness. You should not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Alcohol will increase this side effect.

Valproic acid may cause changes in mood and suicidal thoughts.

Side effects of valproic acid may include: drowsiness, headache,  dizziness, mood swings, diarrhea or constipation,  changes in appetite and weight, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, uncontrollable movements or abnormal thinking.

If you experience the following, call your physician right away: tiny purple or red spots on the skin, symptoms of the liver disease, unusual bleeding or bruising, symptoms of allergic reaction, drop in body temperature, vomiting, weakness in the joints, or extreme tiredness.
