The first time you use a Ventolin HFA inhaler device, shake well then spray 4 test sprays into the air, away from the face, to prime it. Follow this same process if you have not used the inhaler for 2 weeks or it has been dropped.

Ventolin HFA comes in an aerosol pump form. To prevent bronchospasm, the usual dosage for adults and children is 1-2 inhalations every 4-6 hours. Exceeding this frequency or number of administrations is not recommended.

To prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm, a dosage of 2 inhalations is recommended 15 to 30 minutes before exercise.

Major Side Effects

More common: shaking or trembling of the legs, feet, hands, or arms.

Less common: rapid, irregular, racing, or pounding heartbeat or pulse

Rare: a cough, trouble breathing, trouble with swallowing, hives or welts, hoarseness, large, hive-like swelling on the face, lips, tongue, eyelids, throat, legs, hands, feet, or sex organs, noisy breathing, redness of the skin, shortness of breath, skin rash, slow or irregular breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, tightness in the chest, or wheezing.

Incidence not known: agitation, anxiety, pain in the arm, back, or jaw, blurred vision, chest discomfort or pain, confusion, convulsions, extra heartbeats, fainting, hallucinations, headache, irritability, lightheadedness, mood or mental changes, muscle pain or cramps, muscle spasm or jerking of all extremities, nervousness, nightmares, pounding in the ears, restlessness, sudden loss of consciousness, sweating, body jerking, unusual feeling of excitement, or vomiting.

Minor Side Effects

Less common: dizziness, feeling of warmth, irritability, nausea, redness of the face, neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest, sleeplessness, trouble holding in or releasing urine, difficulty sleeping, unable to sleep.

Rare: sleepiness or unusual drowsiness.

Incidence not known: bad, unusual, or unpleasant (after) taste, change in taste, feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings, gagging, rough, scratchy sound to the voice,  the sensation of spinning or tightness in the throat.
