Xarelto is prescribed to prevent or treat deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. In some cases, it may be prescribed to prevent blood clot and stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.

The prescription drug Xarelto is only available as tablets, however, it can come in three different doses: 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg. No matter which dosage you're prescribed, you will usually take one tablet by mouth one time daily with food. Many times, the 10mg dose is prescribed for treatment following surgery and may be prescribed for either less than or more than 30 days. Sometimes, the 15mg dose is prescribed to be taken two times daily for the first 21 days of treatment. Always follow your doctor's instructions and do not alter your dose on your own.

If you need an epidural or spinal anesthesia, tell your doctor or surgeon that you're taking Xarelto in order to avoid a potentially dangerous clot around your spine. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication as it severely increases the likelihood of a blood clot forming. Talk to your doctor immediately or seek medical attention if you experience uncontrolled bleeding. While this medication will not harm a baby while you're pregnant, it may cause dangerously uncontrolled bleeding during childbirth.

You should not use this medication if you have an artificial heart valve, if you are breastfeeding, if you have kidney or liver disease or disorder, or if you're taking certain other medications including antidepressants or other blood thinners.
